As I approached my late teens, things didn’t change much. Except now, it wasn’t just “Why do I have to be fat?” It also became, “Why did I have to get hit by a car?” and “Why do I have to have a rare genetic disorder?” And the worst one to date, “Why did I have to be diagnosed infertile?” The list of “why me?” questions was growing exhaustingly long. In a world full of billions of people, it always seemed like I was the one getting the short end of the stick. Did the universe hate me?
Then one day something changed inside. I can’t explain exactly what happened – because I’m not entirely sure – but a light bulb turned on in my brain. Suddenly, I didn’t want to play the role of the victim anymore, especially not in my own movie! It was time to cast myself as the lead character – the star of my own production!
Not until now, looking back on my past, do I understand why these things happened to me. And not until now, looking through new eyes, do I understand why certain stressful situations, or adversities, present themselves to people when they do. It’s not because we are the targets of the universes cruel jokes – there’s bigger fish to fry! It’s something more profound than that.
It’s happening to you because…
…You Can Handle It
Yes, that’s right. YOU RIGHT THERE. You can handle this. This is the first thing you need to understand. This is happening to you and not the ‘other guy’ because if the ‘other guy’ had to face this, he/she would crumble. You, you’re stronger than that. You’ve got this. Know that! Understand that! And most of all, find a way to take pride in that! Yes it’s bittersweet, and you probably would have rather been reminded of your strength with a nice pat on the back, but life doesn’t work that way. The STRONG are not rewarded in obvious ways. The STRONG are challenged and then given the gift of experience, knowledge and self-empowerment. And yes, this situation had to happen to someone. Why? Because of the next two reasons below (read on). So, take a few deep breaths and find that inner fire! You. Got. This!
…You Can Change Lives
This experience is happening to you because once you surmount it, once you can stand on top of it and shout, “I OVERCAME YOU!” You can share what you’ve learnt. Without our ability as a human race to face a problem, conquer it and then share our experience with others, we’d be nowhere! Think about it. For thousands of years people have faced problems, and for thousands of years people have triumphed! Where would we be as a race if the lessons that resulted were never passed on to other generations? Like I said before, this is happening to you for a much more profound reason than you probably think. See this as an opportunity to help others. Learn what you can from your challenge and spread the word! You may change lives, or possibly even save some.
…Your Approach Will Be Admired & Remembered
Above, I used the word “opportunity”. If you’re thinking I’ve gone crazy I can understand that, but it’s all in how you CHOOSE to view this challenge you’re facing. I chose a long time ago to view my adversities as opportunities. Opportunities to triumph and opportunities to push and work for something I desperately want, so that I can truly feel what it’s like to be accomplished! There is no better feeling than working hard for something and achieving it. I was fat and I changed that! I have a rare genetic disorder, and I dug and pushed for information when no Doctor wanted to talk to me...and I got answers! I have an infertility disorder, and I WILL become a mom one day – no question about it! And guess what? These are the things I am, and will be, most proud of in my life. And when I die one day, I won’t be remembered for the problems I had or the challenges I faced, I’ll be remembered for how I approached them and, ultimately, how I overcame them.
