On March 9th 2013 at 4:00am, Tony and I plan to start walking across the entire length of this island - from the Southern tip all the way to the Northern. And we're going to try to do it in two days.
St. Lucia, a lush little island that I call home, is actually quite tiny at about 43.5km long and 22.5km wide. I know it doesn't sound like much of a journey, but don't be fooled, there's some other factors to consider.
On an island such as this one, the terrain is far from flat. This means that the roads we will be hiking are very hilly and rarely straight, making for a much longer and harder journey than one would think.
The plan is to leave Vieux Fort town in St. Lucia at 4:00am and begin walking up the main road on the East coast. Because of the steep hills and rather crazy drivers, we don't plan on speed walking. So at our leisurely rate, we plan on reaching the Fishing Village of Dennery at around 5pm (about halfway). There, we plan to enjoy the local Fish Fry that takes place every Saturday evening - provided we have the energy to stay awake!
Then, at 4:00am the next morning, we plan on heading back out on the road until we reach an area called Gros Islet, where will will end our journey. We're hoping that if we can keep the pace up and not take too many breaks, we might be able to make it back home by about 5:00pm that Sunday evening. That way, I can still get a good sleep before venturing off to work the next morning! (I think I must be a little bit crazy).
So why are we doing it? Well, I don't really know to be honest...hahaha. I guess we're doing it for bragging rights and for a little fitness adventure. Sometimes it's just nice to try something a little bit out of the ordinary, and also something that to bring you closer with nature.
Plus, I think it will be a great way to wrap up the Insanity program
that I've been doing. The weekend that we will be heading out on
our hike will be the weekend after I finish the 60-day program. So I
think it will be a great way to put my endurance, strength and
stamina to the test! If anybody has any tips on what to pack, please
do let me know! This will be my first hiking trip of this kind and I'm
still a little clueless on how to prepare.
All I know is I'm planning on packing light, bringing a first aid kit,
using my hydration packs from Carnival and carrying along plenty of
protein powder! Otherwise, I think I've still got a lot of pre-planning to
