Thankfully, the Super Bowl has never been circled around food in our household, so I’ve never really fallen into the same binge trap that many other people do on this exciting Sunday. But since I’m quite aware that most Super Bowl fans will be facing table tops lined with food platters this evening, I figured I’d share some of my party food survival tips.
1) Eat Consciously
This is extremely important to remember. Before you grab any food, think! Think about what you’ve already had, what you plan to eat and ask yourself if you need anything more. Then, make a conscious decision to put something in your mouth. Often, at parties, we get so caught up in the moment that we unconsciously shove food in our mouths. That’s when we can quickly get into trouble with overeating. Make a conscious decision every time you eat and you’ll avoid binging.
2) Choose Protein Packed Snacks
Out of what’s available, select items that are richer in protein than anything else. These snacks will satisfy you the fastest, making you feel full so that you’re less likely to dig into more food.
3) Bring Your Own Dish
Before you head to a party, prepare a dish that is suitable for your healthy lifestyle. Check out my favorite food blog, Protein Pow(d)er, for some awesome, protein packed, food ideas. By bringing your own dish, you know that there is something you can eat which won’t completely blow your habits out of the water.
4) Monitor Alcohol Consumption & Choose Carefully
It’s extremely easy to consume a huge amount of calories through alcoholic drinks alone. Limit yourself to 1-2 drinks for the evening and opt for better options like Red Wine or Vodka instead of Beer and other liqueurs. Also, refrain from consuming much, if any, juice as a drink or mixer. Juice is also laden with sugar and just as bad as over-indulging in dessert.
5) Drink Plenty of Water
Make water your main liquid of choice. It’s calorie free, carb free and sodium free, and will help to fill you up faster. Plus, it’s good to have something in your hand at all times, to avoid it from wandering over to the food table.
6) Get Some Activity In
Try to get some activity in before you head out for your Super Bowl party. While it’s not going to ‘cancel out’ the crap that you eat, like people often think, it will ensure that your body is burning some calories for the day. Opt for weight training to get the best and longest calorie burning and glycogen using affect.
